valentine’s cookie boxes

from your secret admirer!

oh boy. valentine’s day is reminiscent of such a special time in my life.

my mom used to make us little surprise boxes of various treats and gifts the morning of. mine almost always included, among other things, a little box of cordial cherries, which remain holy to me as an unbeatable gift, the perfect bite of chocolate, fondant, and cherry (and a good lead-up to easter, where my favorite dark horse of the candy world, the cadbury egg, makes its once-a-year debut).

i also, in classic scorpio fashion, love the idea of the secret admirer, someone who sees you through the honey-colored lens of love and whispers encouragements to you to keep going, continue on, bloom and blossom no matter what.

though many years have passed since my own lovely memories, i think that valentine’s day remains special in its ability to make anyone at all feel special with the kind of magic that can only be attributed to longer days of sunshine as the air shakes off the heavy torpor of winter.

with that, i wanted to present a little box of cookies that you can give to anyone at all as a little note that you are thinking of them.

each box contains:
5 golden milk cookies with royal icing
5 black cocoa rose sables
5 raspberry sumac shortbread with a little fresh thyme
and a little heart-shaped note, “from your secret admirer”

please note that the note cannot be customized for this one due to the size of the paper, and that the cookies do all contain wheat, egg, and dairy–but if there is a significant interest in this, i will be happy to workshop some vegan and gluten free alternatives for next year.

these boxes will retail for $16 and are available for local pick-up and delivery as well as nationwide shipping, but there are a limited number of boxes available–so if you are interested, please place your order as soon as possible!

nationwide shipping orders must be placed by 2/05 in order to guarantee shipment on 2/08 or 2/09, arriving before valentine’s day. local orders must be placed by 2/10 to arrive on (or before) 2/14!

january profit sharing: east phillips urban farm!

after a week of rest to ring in the new year, i wanted to highlight the profit-share community aid for the month of january.

although the earth is still blanketed in snow, daylight is still brief, and our bodies are still inclined towards rest, the farming community is called at this time towards planning, sowing, and preparing. east phillips urban farm is an amazing project in south minneapolis that needs our support so they can fight for access to their community’s rightful land and repurpose it into a truly beneficial neighborhood hub, creating jobs, fighting local pollution, and feeding the community of south minneapolis.

15% of profits for the month of january will go towards their gofundme so they can keep up the good fight! if you want a little sweet treat to ease the doldrums of cold weather, now’s a great time as my books are wide open.

find the east phillips urban farm gofundme here for more information about their misson and current work.

the joy of mutual aid

15% of profits this month going to ZACAH

hey pals!

i’m writing today to touch on a subject near and dear to my heart: mutual aid.

i’ve always been of the mind that we all go farther together, when we can pool our abilities, ideas, and share what we have in order to make sure that others have more. this is an idea that i think can use a lot of refinement coming from me: it’s something I feel really strongly about, but a lot of other people have said it better, so i won’t expound on it too much.

on a personal level, i’ve been working regularly to make mutual aid a recurring practice in my daily life, something about which i often prosthelytize to others. i’ve been racking my brain to try and figure out how best to translate this to babe in the woods, and have decided that every month, 15% of profits (to be clear, that is: what’s coming in that i’m not already spending on shipping, ingredients, packaging, and labor) will go to a rotating twin cities area mutual aid organization. i’ll be happy to provide receipts, and will make it a practice to update people on the organization we’ll be supporting every month, so your dollars can go towards what you care about, too.

this month, because it’s december and cold as shit outside, we’ll be sending a portion of profits over to ZACAH, a twin cities organization that provides hotel rooms to houseless people. because of their ongoing need, i’ll be making weekly donations based on sales through the end of the year.

if you’re able, i strongly encourage you to make mutual aid a recurring practice in your life. this doesn’t have to look like money: there are so many ways we can be available to our communities. but just a little of what we can give freely and regularly can make a positive impact for so many people.

stay warm out there pals, and i hope to bake for you soon.

love,
sadie

12/9/2020 – holiday cookie class at the good acre!

reserve your spot now, because it’s sure to be zoom-tacular

as thanksgiving looms, the babe in the woods kitchen is bustling with cloudy plumes of powdered sugar, the warm mysterious depths of browning butter and cinnamon, and shaggy confetti flecks of buttery pie crust.

my first holiday season isn’t without its challenges in the kitchen, but it’s been empowering and inspiring to work with people to help their loved ones enjoy a special moment of sweetness. if you’ve been thinking of sending cookies to your safely distanced loved ones, my holiday shipping schedule is posted and i’d be happy to work with you to make something special!

i’m also honored to announce that my friends at the good acre will be hosting me on wednesday, december 9th for a zoom baking class all about cookies! if you wanted to take the baking into your own hands this holiday season, i’ll be walking you through my double chocolate crinkle cookies and gluten-free jam thumbprints so you can bring that magic into your own kitchen. although the class is free, you can optionally purchase a $15 gift certificate good for a future order from babe in the woods! or certificates…. who am i to stop you?

for those of you who knew me in a past life when i was helping the good acre put on cooking classes in their maker kitchen, this zoom reunion is a beautiful callback of the past intertwining with the journeys of the present. after leaving restaurants, i was on a personal mission, looking for work that felt more sustainable and significant in the larger scheme of minnesota’s local food systems. enter the good acre: a non-profit food hub offering grower support and an organic warehouse to BIPOC farmers, and housing small businesses within a shared maker’s kitchen. to keep this brief, i can say we really do so much more than that, and every day i am honored to be a part of something so great as both the kitchen coordinator and a hopeful maker-to-be myself.

you can reserve your space for the zoom event here. all participants will receive a copy of the two recipes featured that evening.

end of 2020 shipping schedule

if you wanna get cookies shipped at some point during the end of the year, here is the schedule i’m working with currently…

– monday, december 7 (to arrive on or before december 11)
– monday, december 14 (to arrive on or before december 18)
– saturday, december 19 (to arrive on or before december 23)
– monday, december 28 (to arrive on or before january 2)
– monday, january 4 (to arrive on or before january 8)

if you’ve been thinking about sending cookies, caramels, lemon bars, or other treats to your faraway beloveds (or yourself, tbh, as you are also beloved), now is the time to get to planning!

the website is live!

plus a giveaway and some ideas i have kicking around

hello all!

we’re still currently closed for new orders (but we open back up on november 3rd!). HOWEVER, i wanted to give everyone else who, like me, loves perusing a menu before going somewhere a chance to look everything over and decide what sounds perfect for the holidays. so the website is live as of this moment.

if you sign up for the newsletter within the first couple weeks (now until november 14th) you’ll be entered into a drawing to have a dozen cookies mailed your way.

if you live locally, i have some cool limited time only (?) pie options coming up for the holiday season. i’m also kicking around the idea of a pear and rum raisin tart with frangipane, so if that sounds like an ideal holiday treat for you, just let me know and we can work something out. i’ve also been thinking about a parsnip spice cake, but who’s to say what will happen with that.

thanks everyone for your support and love!
